June Reminders & Sharing Schedule

Continuing Units of Study
We are continuing our study of Communities this month and will be exploring what a community is, as well as how people can impact their communities in a variety of ways. We have two exciting field trips scheduled as culminating activities for our unit of study and the kids are really excited about them both!


Birthdays – June & August (and one October!) 2011
We have 7 birthdays to celebrate this month and we will celebrate on Friday, June 10th at 12:40. These people will celebrate their birthdays this month and this summer:

DIBELS Testing
Our final round of DIBELS testing will happen this week. Students will be assessed in their reading fluency and retell quality. At the end of second grade, we are looking for a reading rate of at least 87 words per minute and at the end of third grade a reading rate of at least 100 words per minute. Retell quality must include at least 3 details in sequential order to be a passing retell.

Special Events this Month
Not only do we have two filed trips this month, we also would like to schedule a surprise “Thank You/Goodbye” party for Miss White who finished up her student teaching in May and just graduated this past weekend. I am planning a little going away celebration on Wednesday, June 8th at 12:40 in her honor. If you would like to contribute a small snack or drink, please let me know. The kids have made a book to present to her all about the “All Kinds of Student Teachers.”

Space Projects...

Our Space Unit is warping, I mean wrapping, up next week. Please remember to have all projects turned in by Friday, May 6th for scoring. We may continue to share projects into the following week, but the due date is May 6th.

The students have learned so much about our Solar System and I am thrilled to see their creativity and excitement! This has been a great unit!

Second rounds of OAKS testing will begin the first week of May for any students not meeting the 3^rd grade benchmark. Please contact Mrs. Schneider with any questions you may have.

Special Events this Month

Miss White will be finishing up her student teaching with us this month. She is continuing with her math unit and will be utilizing her time with the students as much as possible in these final weeks of her placement. Her last day in our classroom will be May 19^th. She will be around the building periodically during the week of May 23^rd- 27^th observing other classrooms and teachers. We will miss her and wish her all the best! Happy Graduation!

April Changes

Here are a couple of changes to our April calendar!

April 15th - Birthday Celebration - Time Change ONLY - New time is 12:00 pm

April 27th - Volunteer Breakfast - Date Change ONLY - was scheduled for the 15th, then the 29th and now we are set for the 27th:)

Space Projects are due by April 29th! Remember that most projects will be completed at school.

School Supplies

We have depleted most if not all of our glue sticks and pencils. If you could send in some new ones that would be wonderful! Many students also have colored pencils that are nubs, crayons that have broken or markers that are running low on ink. Any supplies you can replenish would be so helpful. Third graders are also beginning the transition to using Wide-Ruled Notebook paper for many of their written assignments and can bring a package in to share or have some in a three-ring binder for their use. Thank you in advance!

New Units of Study

We are beginning our study of the Solar System and Earth and its Moon. Students will be bringing home a NASA Spacecraft Crew Contract for you to sign and and return back to school as we begin our studies. Each student will choose a crew member they want to be based on the number of points they will try to earn during our project time.

Miss White

Miss White will be continuing to take over more and more responsibility as she continues her student teaching. Beginning this month, she will begin her Work Sample in the area of Mathematics. This is a required piece of her student teaching placement and completion of her work sample is required for the state of Oregon. Therefore, for the month of April, we will not need the wonderful help we have been receiving during the 2^nd grade math block. If something changes during the month, we will send a note asking for help as needed. Thanks so much for your continued support!

Birthdays – April 2011

We have 3 birthdays to celebrate this month and we will celebrate on Friday, April 15^th at 12:40. Spencer Veatch will be celebrating his birthday on April 14^th, Michael Evans will celebrate his birthday on April 17^th, and Allie Macartney will celebrate her birthday on April 18^th. Happy Birthday, Spencer, Michael, & Allie!

3^rd Grade OAKS Reading Testing

Our first round of OAKS testing will occur in this month in April. Math testing will occur on Monday and Tuesday, April 4^th and 5^th in the mornings. Reading testing will take place on Monday and Tuesday, April 11^th and 12^th during our Language Arts block. Please have your children get a good night’s rest and eat a good breakfast so they can perform their best. This is the first of up to three rounds of testing each student may take in working to meet the 3^rd grade state standards in Reading and Mathematics.

We will also be participating in the District Spring Writing Assessment later in the month; during the week of April 24^th.

Sharing Schedule: For April 2011
