June, 2011…
Communication:
If at any time you have concerns or questions, please don’t hesitate to e-mail, send a note with your child, or call. Mr. Purcell sends out weekly email newsletters, but I also have a class blog available at: http://mrsschneiders23class.blogspot.com where I will post updates, upcoming events, and other important information. If you do not have internet access, please let me know and I will make sure to send a paper copy home with your child.
Continuing Units of Study
We are continuing our study of Communities this month and will be exploring what a community is, as well as how people can impact their communities in a variety of ways. We have two exciting field trips scheduled as culminating activities for our unit of study and the kids are really excited about them both!
Birthdays – June & August (and one October!) 2011
We have 7 birthdays to celebrate this month and we will celebrate on Friday, June 10th at 12:40. These people will celebrate their birthdays this month and this summer:

• Dakota Poehler – October 28th (We are celebrating Dakota’s birthday because he joined out class after his birthday!)

DIBELS Testing
Our final round of DIBELS testing will happen this week. Students will be assessed in their reading fluency and retell quality. At the end of second grade, we are looking for a reading rate of at least 87 words per minute and at the end of third grade a reading rate of at least 100 words per minute. Retell quality must include at least 3 details in sequential order to be a passing retell.
Special Events this Month
Not only do we have two filed trips this month, we also would like to schedule a surprise “Thank You/Goodbye” party for Miss White who finished up her student teaching in May and just graduated this past weekend. I am planning a little going away celebration on Wednesday, June 8th at 12:40 in her honor. If you would like to contribute a small snack or drink, please let me know. The kids have made a book to present to her all about the “All Kinds of Student Teachers.”
