Holiday Events
First of all, we had the CVMS Intermediate band come play Christmas carols for us today and that was a great treat. So fun seeing former students and getting even more into the holiday spirit. On Thursday, we will have a special showing of The Polar Express with Mrs. Bortnem's class and the kids are invited to bring a small stuffed animal to cuddle with. Friday will be a day filled with singing and celebrating! We have the Sing-A-Long with Mrs. Ganske at 9:30 and our Christmas Party is scheduled for 1:50. Thank you to all who are able to help out! We appreciate you so much!
School is out for the break beginning December 18th - January 4th. Monday, January 3rd is an In-service day for teachers, but no school for students.
See you all in 2011! Merry Christmas and Happy New Yer to you!

December News
Book orders were sent home today and are due back by Monday, December 6th so the orders will be back before the Winter Break.
I will be sending home Volunteer Calendars tomorrow and know that this time of the year can be extremely busy, so please know that I appreciate your time and talents more than words can ever express!
We have 2 and 1/2 weeks full of activities and learning to get through before Winter Break so I look forward to seeing everyone as much as possible so no one misses out on anything. One of our activities is listening to the old radio show Cinnamon Bear. We are listening to the original episodes in class each day and creating a picture story book to go along with the episodes. We are also continuing our studies of the Native Americans of America. As we listen to the legends of the Native Americans, we learn new things about how they perceived natural events and communicated their understanding of the world through pictures and words. The final week before Winter Break we will be spending some time looking at traditions around the world through the holidays.
Here's to a wonderful end of 2010 and a bright beginning of 2011!

2/3 Important Information
2010-2011
We look forward to working with you and your child this year. We want to thank you in advance for your support. Working together will help assure your child a successful school experience. We encourage frequent parent-teacher contact, as open communication is vital to an effective program.
Communication:
If at any time you have concerns or questions, please don’t hesitate to e-mail, send a note with your child, or call. Mr. Purcell sends out weekly email newsletters, but I also have a class blog available at: http://mrsschneiders23class.blogspot.com where I will post updates, upcoming events, and other important information. If you do not have internet access, please let me know and I will make sure to send a paper copy home with your child.
Classroom Management:
For behavioral reminders, I am using a three-color card system. Each day every child will start with a green card. If misbehavior occurs, a verbal warning will be given. If problems continue they will be asked to pull a card to yellow. A yellow card means a loss of five minutes of recess. If another situation arises and they have to pull a card to red, and a note and/or phone call will be sent home or made and Mr. Purcell will be notified.
Check Out System:
Children are expected to complete tasks on time – this includes homework. Work that is complete, but is turned in after the deadline will be counted as late. On most weeks, homework will be passed out on Monday and due back by Friday. A daily Check In will be completed so the Homework Check In sheet should be returned to school each day.
Homework:
We recommend that approximately 20-30 minutes be set aside for homework each evening (Monday through Thursday). Please assist your child if necessary. As part of their homework, students are required to read each evening. It is your child’s responsibility to present their Homework Check In Sheet to you each evening for your signature.
If your child is absent due to an illness or family business for an extended amount of time, we recommend that daily reading continue. A formal homework packet may be excused for such instances.
Birthdays:
On a student’s birthday, he or she will receive a birthday postcard certificate and a special pencil. As in previous years, birthday party invitations may not be distributed at school.
I will schedule birthday celebration days once per month. All students with a birthday during that month will be able to participate in our class celebration.
Sharing:
Students will be given one day each month for a sharing. Please check the class blog for reminders. Pets are difficult to do sharing with as we have some students with severe allergies. All sharing items should fit inside the student’s school bag and will come home at the end of their sharing day.
Special Activities/Parent Involvement:
ALL volunteering requires a district security check and volunteer badge. Please contact Mrs. Waakles for assistance.
During the year, we engage in several educational activities that help us experience and understand what we study. These activities require parent support in order to be successful, so there will be many ways you can be involved this year.
As a volunteer, we may ask you to do clerical work, material preparation, or interact with students depending upon which would be most beneficial at the time.
EYST has arranged a Classroom Coordinator for class parties. You may be called to assist. There are usually three (3) class scheduled per year (Harvest Party, Christmas Party, and Valentine’s Party).
If other opportunities arise for parent involvement we will contact you for your assistance. Thank you again for all your support! We look forward to a wonderful year!

Technology in the Classroom
In my former classroom I have utilized all this technology daily to meet the needs of my students in a variety of ways and through a variety of modalities. Students afraid to ask the question, afraid to give a wrong answer in front of the group, those who need assistance in writing or organizing their thoughts, those who live for presenting information through video or presentation software, those who want to try something new, want to practice their skills online, or just want to publish their work have benefited from the technology available to them.
In my new building, I am not going to have classroom computers or student response systems. I will not have access daily to computers for students to work with or student response systems to assess the group as a whole in a nonthreatening way. I am not going to have the technology I have become accustomed to for implementation and teaching. The ability to move students forward in this technological age requires the introduction of technology through learning and within the educational setting. Technology will continue to advance and our children/students will need the skills to keep up with the advancements.
